What’s the difference between a cold shower and a cold plunge?

We are a cold plunge equipment rental service in Vancouver, BC and specialize in collaboration & community events to bring the cold plunge experience to local communities.

Cold exposure can be done many ways, two of the most popular being a cold shower or a cold dip in a cold plunge tank. A cold shower and a cold plunge both involve exposing the body to cold water, but there are some key differences between the two:

  1. Temperature and Duration:

    • Cold Shower: A cold shower involves standing under a stream of cold water in a shower. The water temperature can vary, but it's typically cooler than room temperature. The duration of a cold shower can vary based on individual preference and tolerance.

    • Cold Plunge: A cold plunge typically refers to immersing the entire body into a cold water bath or pool, often at temperatures below 15.5°C. The duration of a cold plunge is usually shorter, typically lasting for a few minutes, as prolonged exposure to very cold water can be uncomfortable and potentially harmful.

  2. Intensity and Exposure:

    • Cold Shower: Taking a cold shower can be a less intense form of cold exposure compared to a cold plunge. The water pressure from the showerhead and the ability to adjust the water temperature make it a more controlled experience.

    • Cold Plunge: Immersing your body in a cold pool or bath is a more intense form of cold exposure, as your entire body is exposed to the cold water. This can trigger a more significant physiological response, including vasoconstriction and the "cold shock" response.

  3. Purpose and Benefits:

    • Cold Shower: Cold showers are often used for refreshing and invigorating purposes. They can help wake you up, improve alertness, and provide a quick stress-relief effect. Cold showers may also offer some of the benefits mentioned earlier, such as improved circulation and mood enhancement.

    • Cold Plunge: Cold plunges are commonly used by athletes and fitness enthusiasts after intense workouts to aid in recovery. The cold water immersion helps reduce muscle inflammation, soreness, and swelling. It can also provide a more comprehensive cold therapy experience due to the greater immersion of the body.

  4. Application:

    • Cold Shower: Cold showers are relatively easy to incorporate into your daily routine as part of your regular hygiene practices.

    • Cold Plunge: Cold plunges may require access to a cold water source, such as a cold water pool or bath. They are often planned activities and are commonly found in settings like spas, sports facilities, or natural bodies of cold water… Or at events like ours!
